High-quality building materials such as concrete are typically made from large aggregates (e.g. gravel, sand or crushed stones). The aggregates are mixed with cement and water to form a cementitious mix. Water is added to the mixture, and the water reacts with the cement to harden the structure. Typical of such building materials are concrete, cement-based products, and bricks. There are many reasons for using such building materials, such as for structural support, or as a thermal insulator, or as a sound barrier, or as a thermal or sound insulator. All such building materials are heavy, and therefore, are not well suited for use in situations where light weight is desired. Moreover, such materials are typically not well suited for use in environments where freezing and/or thawing is likely, as the water content of such materials may freeze or deteriorate at cold temperatures. It is therefore desirable to provide building materials that are lightweight and that resist deterioration caused by freezing and thawing.A new device for measuring the contact angle of liquids on solid surfaces has been developed at the Center for Photonic Sciences, E-961, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The device consists of a transparent optical fiber with a thin groove etched on the central part of the fiber. A large angle of the optical fiber can be seen through the groove, and the contact angle of the liquid (or, in the case of a drop, the meniscus) on the grooved optical fiber can be measured with the naked eye. This device could also be used to measure the contact angle of aerosols, droplets of water, glycerol, organic solvents, aerosols, and other nano-scale fluids in the air, which are of interest in many scientific and engineering applications. We have developed the first prototype of the device, and its performance is described in this article. Figure 1. Schematic showing the proposed measuring device with a small drop of liquid on a fiber end. The large angle of the fiber can be seen through the groove. The contact angle of a liquid on a solid surface is a fundamental physical parameter in the science of surface science. For a drop
